A bonus is only worth what its terms let you keep. The lines that decide it, and what each one means for you.
The headline tells you little. What decides whether a bonus is worth taking is the wagering, because every euro you bet loses a little on average. Here is a €100 bonus at 35x, played on a slot that returns 96%. Change the numbers to see what the terms do:
These are averages over many players. Some win more, most lose some, and many run out of money before the wagering is done.
Wagering is how many times you must bet a bonus before you can withdraw it, or what it won. It decides most of what a bonus is worth.
| The same €100 bonus at 35x | Bets you need | Average loss at 96% |
|---|---|---|
| Wagering on the bonus only | €3,500 | €140 |
| Wagering on the deposit and the bonus | €7,000 | €280 |
Read which one the terms mean. “35x the bonus” and “35x the deposit and bonus” look alike, but one costs twice as much as the other.
Not every bet counts in full. Slots usually count 100%; table and live games often count 10% or nothing, and some slots with a high RTP are left out altogether. The full list is in the bonus terms.
| Game | Usually counts | Bets to clear €100 at 35x |
|---|---|---|
| Most slots | 100% | €3,500 |
| Blackjack, roulette, live games | 10%, or nothing | €35,000 |
| Jackpot and high-RTP slots | Often nothing | They don’t count |
While a bonus is active there is a cap on each stake, usually €5. One bet over it can cost you the bonus and everything it won, even by mistake.
Many bonuses, above all no deposit offers and free spins, cap what they can pay out: €100 is common. Anything above the cap is removed when you finish the wagering.
You have a set number of days to finish the wagering, often 7 to 30. What is left at the end is taken back. A short limit with high wagering pushes you to bet more, faster: that is the combination to avoid.
With a non-sticky bonus you play with your own money first. If you win before touching the bonus, you can usually cash out and give the bonus up, with no wagering. With a sticky bonus the bonus money can be played but never withdrawn: it is taken away when you cash out.
Some welcome offers don’t count deposits made with Skrill, Neteller or other e-wallets. Check the terms before you pay in, or the bonus won’t be added.
Irish players can play at licensed online casinos. The Gambling Regulation Act 2024 set up the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland, which is taking over licensing; until its licences cover online casinos fully, most sites that accept Irish players are licensed in Malta or the UK. We name the licence on every casino we list.
No tax on winnings. Gambling winnings are not taxed for players in Ireland today, though the rules can change.
Most casinos let you set limits and close your account for a while; each review lists the tools a casino has. Set them up before you need them.
The one with the lowest wagering you can realistically finish, not the biggest number. For regular players, cashback with little or no wagering is often worth the most.
The lower the better: 25x or less is good, 35x is common, over 40x is poor. No wagering at all is best.
Usually only by giving up the bonus and what it won. With a non-sticky bonus you can often withdraw your own winnings if you haven’t started on the bonus yet.
Bets needed = the bonus, or the deposit and bonus, times the wagering, divided by the share of each bet that counts. The average loss is those bets times the house edge (100% minus the RTP). The bonus minus that loss is what it is worth on average.
Because clearing it takes so many bets that the average loss on the way is bigger than the bonus. That is not a guaranteed loss, but on average it costs you.
No. You can say no at the deposit, and then your winnings are yours to withdraw at once.
